Albania eSIM 2026: Complete Guide (and the Corfu Roaming Trap Nobody Warns You About)

Albania is one of the European destinations gaining travellers fastest, and almost nobody is talking about it yet.

Part of the appeal is exactly that: Albania still feels like a discovery. Unspoiled Mediterranean coast, cities layered with Ottoman and communist history, beaches that look like Greece thirty years ago, and prices that make even Italy or Croatia feel expensive. All of it a short flight from much of Europe.

This guide covers what you need to know before you fly: coverage, plans, prices, and a specific problem that affects many travellers who aren’t even going to Albania — but end up paying the bill anyway.

The Roaming Problem Nobody Warns You About

Corfu sits right off the Albanian coast. On the eastern coast of the Greek island, the signal from Albanian carriers — particularly ALBtelecom and ONE Telecommunications — is in some spots stronger than the Greek signal. If your phone is set to connect automatically to the nearest network, it can jump to an Albanian operator without you noticing and without any warning.

The result: you land in Corfu, turn on your phone, and see “Welcome to Albania.” You don’t think much of it. But your home carrier has activated roaming in Albania — which is not in the EU, so EU roaming regulations don’t apply — and you can come home to a roaming bill you weren’t expecting.

This isn’t rare. It’s a documented problem that particularly affects the Kavos area at the southern tip of Corfu, where proximity to Albania is greatest.

The fix is simple and comes in two versions:

First option: enable manual network selection on your phone before arriving in Corfu. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Options → Network Selection → Manual and choose a Greek carrier (Cosmote, Vodafone Greece or Nova). On Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Network Operators → Manual.

Second option — the cleaner one if you’re visiting both Greece and Albania: use a separate eSIM for each destination. A Greece eSIM for Corfu, an Albania eSIM for the Albanian leg. Each one routes through the correct country’s networks, and accidental roaming becomes impossible.

Albania in 2026: What’s Actually Happening

The Albanian tourism boom isn’t a passing trend. It has three concrete drivers behind it.

Price. Albania remains one of the cheapest countries in Europe for Western travellers. Eating out in Sarandë or Berat and staying on the Albanian Riviera — the coastal strip running from Vlorë to the Greek border — still cost noticeably less than in Santorini or Dubrovnik.

The coast. The Albanian Riviera has pebble and sand beaches with water that competes directly with the Greek islands — but without the cruise ships, without the July and August crowds, and without inflated high-season prices. Dhermi, Himara, Jal and Ksamil are the names appearing on every “unspoiled European beaches” list right now.

The history. Albania has layers of history that most travellers know nothing about. Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a city of stone houses built into a mountainside with an Ottoman castle at the top. Berat, also a UNESCO site, is known as the “city of a thousand windows.” The communist-era bunkers built by the Hoxha regime, scattered all over the country, are a constant visual presence and a physical reminder of a history with no equivalent in Western Europe.

Mobile Coverage in Albania: The Reality Zone by Zone

Albania has three main carriers: ALBtelecom, ONE Telecommunications and Vodafone Albania. Coverage has improved, but there are real differences depending on where you go.

Tirana. Full 4G/5G coverage across the capital. The centre — Bulevardet, Skanderbeg Square, the Kruja Bazaar — no issues.

Sarandë and the southern Riviera. Good 4G coverage in Sarandë, Ksamil and the main coastal villages. Vodafone Albania has a particularly strong presence in this area. On more remote beaches and mountain roads connecting Riviera villages, signal can be intermittent.

Himara and Dhermi. 4G coverage in the town centres. In the more secluded coves — which happen to be the best beaches — signal drops to 3G or disappears in stretches. Download offline maps before leaving the village.

Gjirokastër and Berat. 4G coverage in the cities. On hiking routes and in rural areas between cities, signal is patchy. ONE Telecommunications performs better in inland areas.

Albania-Greece border crossing (Kakavijë/Kapshticë). A transition zone where signal alternates between Albanian and Greek carriers. If you’re driving from Greece, the network change is automatic at the crossing — this is where your phone can get stuck between networks without manual selection set.

Mountain roads (Tirana–Sarandë via the interior). The SH4 through Llogaraja National Park has long stretches without coverage. Download offline maps for that section before starting.

How Much Data Do You Actually Need in Albania

Albania is a destination where data consumption is more moderate than most countries because hotel and restaurant WiFi is generally good, even in coastal areas.

There are two situations where mobile data is critical:

On the road. If you hire a car — the most efficient way to see the Riviera and the historic cities — Google Maps with active data is essential. Albanian roads have inconsistent signage and coastal traffic in August can require real-time alternative routes.

At the beaches. The best beaches in Albania are in coves accessible only by dirt track or by boat. Without data to navigate the last few kilometres, you can get genuinely lost.

Realistic estimates by trip type:

  • Sarandë + coastal Riviera, 7 days (beach, restaurants, short transfers): 3–5 GB
  • Tirana + historic cities + coast, 10–14 days: 5–10 GB
  • Full Albania road trip by car, including mountain zones and remote areas: 10–15 GB

The 5GB / 30-day plan covers most standard Albania trips. The 10GB / 30-day is the safest option if you’re driving mountain roads.

eSIM vs Local SIM in Albania

Tirana airport and Sarandë have physical SIM sales points. Local SIMs are an option, but they require your passport and the process can be slow in high season. If your trip combines Albania with Greece, a local Albanian SIM leaves you without data the moment you cross the border.

For a trip to Albania only, the local SIM is a valid alternative. For any route combining countries, the eSIM is the more flexible option.

Albania + Greece: The Route Most Travellers Take

The most common route for travellers discovering Albania is entering via Sarandë — a short ferry ride from Corfu — and combining Albania with Greece in the same trip. Ferries connect Corfu with Sarandë every day in summer.

The optimal connectivity setup for this route:

  • Greece eSIM active for the Greek leg (Corfu, possibly Athens)
  • Albania eSIM installed in parallel, activate it when you board the ferry to Sarandë

Both coexist on your phone without interference. You switch the active data line in settings in a few seconds. No accidental roaming, no surprise bills.

If you bought an eSIM for “the Greece trip”, from any provider, check that it covers Albania before you cross: don’t assume it does.

FAQ

Does Albania have 5G? Yes, but limited: 5G is available in Tirana and some major cities. On the coast and in rural areas coverage is 4G/LTE.

Does EU free roaming apply in Albania? No. Albania is an EU candidate country but not a member. Using your home SIM in Albania without an eSIM means your carrier will charge international roaming rates.

Is Albania safe for travellers? Yes. Albania has a low crime rate against tourists and the local population is known for hospitality. The tourist areas of the Riviera and the historic cities are completely safe.

Can I combine Corfu and Albania in the same trip? Yes, and it’s the most popular combination. The Corfu–Sarandë ferry is short and runs every day in summer. With two eSIMs installed — one Greek, one Albanian — you switch active lines when you board the boat.

Can I use hotspot to share data? Yes, on compatible devices.

What currency does Albania use? Albania uses the Albanian lek (ALL), though euros are accepted at many tourist businesses on the Riviera. Mobile payments work at modern establishments in Tirana and coastal resorts, but in inland villages it’s cash.
