Turkey eSIM 2026: the block nobody tells you about before you fly

Turkey's BTK ordered access blocked to eight eSIM provider sites — Airalo and Holafly among them. What that means in practice, and why you buy before you land.

Turkey eSIM 2026: the block nobody tells you about before you fly

Picture this: you land in Antalya, turn on your phone and realize you forgot to buy an eSIM. You open your browser, search for the provider you had in mind, and the page doesn’t load. It’s the scene travellers have been describing in Turkey since the summer of 2025.

It isn’t a coverage problem or a phone issue. On 10 July 2025 Turkey’s telecoms regulator, the BTK, ordered access blocked to eight international eSIM providers — Airalo and Holafly among them. And almost no travel guide tells you, because almost no travel guide is written by someone who doesn’t earn a commission on every eSIM they sell.

This article will.

What the BTK block is and why it exists

The BTK — Bilgi Teknolojileri ve İletişim Kurumu, Turkey’s telecommunications regulatory authority — has long used its powers to restrict access to foreign digital services from Turkish territory. Wikipedia was blocked for years, and so are several VPNs. In July 2025, the block extended to international eSIM providers.

The official reason was never explicitly stated, but the context is clear: Turkey has three major national carriers — Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom — which for years sold physical SIMs to tourists at airports. International eSIMs were eating directly into that business. The block arrived shortly after the eSIM market for travelers in Turkey started growing significantly.

It’s not the first time a government has protected local carriers this way. It’s just the first time it’s happening to so many travelers without anyone warning them before they check their bags.

And there’s one detail that makes Turkey the most tangled destination of all: it combines two separate blocks. The BTK one, aimed at eSIM platforms and the subject of this article, and the IMEI block, aimed at your phone’s hardware after 120 days in the country. They’re independent problems with different solutions. We cover the second one here: Countries Where Your Phone Stops Working: The IMEI Block Guide

Why a travel eSIM still works in Turkey

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it decides everything you do next: the BTK block is a block on websites, not on connections.

An eSIM you already have installed connects to Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey or Türk Telekom as a roaming line, the same way your home SIM would. The BTK does not filter that traffic — its lists block the domains of the eSIM shops. Your data does not stop working because the shop’s website is unreachable.

So in Turkey the question is never “will the eSIM work once I’m there”. It’s “can I still buy and install it from inside the country”. Two things have to happen from inside Turkey: reaching the shop to pay, and downloading the eSIM profile, which needs some connection — airport or hotel Wi-Fi is enough.

That is why the advice further down is so blunt: buy before you fly if you can. It removes both steps from the equation.

Which providers are blocked — and which aren’t

The decision has a date, a number and a list. On 10 July 2025, BTK decision E-98966759-450.08-36681 ordered access blocked to eight international eSIM providers: Saily, Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Instabridge, Mobimatter, Alosim and BNESIM, as reported by the Turkish press (DonanımHaber, T24). Those eight are the part we can point at.

Since then, traveller and press reports have described a longer list. We are not going to repeat a number we cannot check: BTK does not publish a public register of blocked domains, so beyond those eight names, what circulates is reports, not a source.

What isn’t entirely clear — and honesty matters here — is whether the block affects only the website or also the eSIM profile download once purchased. Available data suggests the block is primarily at the domain level: if you already have the QR code or activation link downloaded on your phone before arriving, installation works without issue. The problem is for travelers who arrive without having bought anything and need to access their provider’s site from inside Turkey.

MolaHop does not appear on BTK blocked domain lists, and we can put a number on it rather than a claim: between 6 and 17 September 2026, 15 purchases were completed on molahop.com from inside Turkey — that is our own order data, and it is the reason we say it works from there.

What we are not going to tell you is that it will still be true next month. Block lists change, and being absent from them today is not a guarantee for tomorrow. Nor have we tested downloading the eSIM profile over a Turkish mobile connection: our customers bought from inside the country, and the install itself needs a working connection of some kind.

What to do depending on your situation

If you haven’t flown yet

Buy and install the eSIM before leaving home. Not at the airport — at home, on stable WiFi, without rushing.

The MolaHop process: buy via web or WhatsApp, receive the activation link by email and WhatsApp, install the profile in your phone settings, done. No need to activate it yet — the plan starts counting when your phone first connects to a Turkish network, not from purchase. You can install it days in advance without losing a single hour of data.

One detail that makes a difference: save the QR code or activation link in your photo gallery before flying. If you lose the confirmation email at the airport, you have it offline.

If you’re already in Turkey without an eSIM

Three options, ranked best to worst:

First — molahop.com or MolaHop WhatsApp from hotel WiFi. Since it’s not blocked, you can complete the purchase and receive the activation link via WhatsApp. The profile downloads over hotel WiFi and you have data within minutes.

Second — local physical SIM at the airport. Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom have counters at Istanbul IST, Antalya AYT and Bodrum BJV. They require your passport and there’s usually a queue. But it works.

Third — VPN. Technically possible, but fragile: many VPN apps are also blocked in Turkey. The ones still working require activating an obfuscation mode before entering the country, because once inside you can’t download the app if you don’t have it installed. The weakest option of the three.

How much data do you actually need

The answer depends more on the type of trip than the destination.

A week at a resort in Antalya or Bodrum — hotel WiFi covers in-room usage, beaches at major resorts have good signal, and real usage outside the hotel is limited to Instagram, WhatsApp and occasional Google Maps. 3–5 GB is more than enough.

A week combining Istanbul with the coast — Istanbul metro, navigating the Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia, the Bosphorus — more maps, more photos, more searches. Go up to 8–12 GB to be comfortable.

Digital nomad or remote work from Turkey — 20GB or unlimited plan. On 1 October 2026 MolaHop was the cheapest on 20GB / 30 days, but not on unlimited: Holafly was cheaper on 1, 3 and 5 days, Airalo on 3 and 5, and Nomad on 5. Every figure, with its source: best eSIM for Turkey, compared.

The most common mistake: buying unlimited out of fear of running out and ending up using a few GB in a beach week. For most beach holidays the 5GB plan is enough.

Coverage destination by destination

Antalya, Side, Alanya, Kemer, Belek. Excellent 4G/5G coverage across the entire Mediterranean coastal strip. All three Turkish carriers cover this area well. No issues at resorts or busy beaches.

Bodrum and Marmaris. Very good coverage. Vodafone Turkey has a particularly strong presence in this Aegean resort region.

Istanbul. Commercial 5G is available in the city. The historic center — Sultanahmet, Galata, Beyoğlu, Bosphorus cruises — no interruptions. Metro and tram have coverage in most stations.

Cappadocia. Good coverage in Göreme and main villages. Intermittent in deeper valleys during hiking routes. Download offline maps just in case.

Northern Aegean coast (Çeşme, İzmir, Pamukkale). Good urban coverage. At Ephesus and larger archaeological sites, signal can be patchy.

Eastern Turkey and Black Sea interior. Only Turkcell has reliable coverage here. If your trip includes these areas, confirm your eSIM routes through Turkcell.

What works normally — and what doesn’t

A common question before flying: are social media blocked in Turkey?

Not for the summer tourist. Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, WhatsApp, X — all accessible normally in July and August. Turkey applies temporary social media blocks during specific internal political crises (the most recent was March 2025, lasted a few days and mainly affected residents), but these are not the typical scenario for a one or two week trip.

What is permanently blocked and could affect you:

  • International eSIM provider sites — the main subject of this article
  • Some VPNs

FAQ

If I buy Airalo before flying, can I use it in Turkey? Yes. The block affects access to the website from inside Turkey, not the functioning of an already-installed eSIM profile. If you buy and install it in your home country, it works fine in Turkey.

Can I top up data if I run out while there? With MolaHop yes, over WhatsApp or the website: 15 purchases were completed from inside Turkey between 6 and 17 September 2026. With a provider named in the BTK decision you would have to reach their site or app from inside the country, and that is exactly what the decision targets — ask them how they handle it, because we have not tested it.

Does the eSIM work on the ferry to nearby Greek islands? The Turkey eSIM covers Turkish territory. In Greek waters or on islands like Kos, Rhodes or Samos you need a different plan. If your trip includes both Turkey and Greek islands, consider a regional plan.

Does hotspot work for sharing data? Yes, on compatible devices.

Does Turkey have 5G in 2026? Yes, in major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. Tourist coastal areas are still mainly on 4G/4.5G, which is more than sufficient for typical travel use.
