Which Japanese network has the best coverage?
NTT Docomo has historically the broadest rural coverage, with KDDI/au very close behind. SoftBank is solid in cities but weaker in mountain villages, Hokkaido north and some rural Kyushu. Rakuten is fast in cities where it's deployed but spotty elsewhere. For typical tourist routes (Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Hiroshima) all networks are excellent.
Do I really need 5G in Japan?
Probably not. 4G LTE in Japan is among the fastest in the world. 5G is widespread in central Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama and other big cities, but for typical traveler use (maps, translation, messaging, video calls) 4G is more than enough.
Will my eSIM work in rural Japan or just cities?
In rural areas NTT docomo and KDDI/au work best. Holafly and Nomad name KDDI and SoftBank, Airalo names SoftBank plus one other, and MolaHop's network depends on the plan. If you're heading to Shikoku, rural Kyushu or northern Hokkaido, check the network of the specific plan before buying.
Can I tether / use hotspot from my Japan eSIM?
With MolaHop, yes: hotspot works on compatible devices within your plan's data. Holafly states a shareable allowance of 1GB per day. For the others, check the plan page before buying.
How much data do I need for a 2-week trip?
For typical usage (maps, photos, social, occasional video) plan on ~1-1.5GB per day. A 2-week trip = ~15-20GB. If you stream a lot, want to upload many photos or share hotspot, go unlimited or 30GB+.
