No Data After Landing in Japan (NRT/HND) in 2026 — Quick eSIM Fix Checklist

You just landed at Narita or Haneda. You open Google Maps to find the train. Nothing. You try WhatsApp to say you’ve arrived. Nothing. You search for the Narita Express schedule. Nothing.

You’re not alone. It’s one of the most common eSIM problems for travelers in Japan — and it’s usually fixed in a couple of minutes without leaving your seat.

Work through this checklist from top to bottom and stop at the step that works.

First: understand why this happens specifically in Japan

Japan has a quirk most destinations don’t: its carriers (NTT Docomo, SoftBank, KDDI) require data roaming to be explicitly enabled in your settings, even if your eSIM is installed correctly. In Europe many phones have this on by default. In Japan, they don’t.

Second factor: if you bought the eSIM the same day as your flight or installed it in a rush, the profile may not have downloaded completely. It happens more than you’d think.

Checklist — iPhone

Step 1: check the eSIM is set as your active data line

Go to Settings → Mobile Data. You’ll see your lines listed. Your Japan eSIM must appear there. Tap it and confirm it’s selected as the active data line.

If the eSIM doesn’t appear in the list → skip to Step 4.

Step 2: enable data roaming

Inside Settings → Mobile Data → [your eSIM name], find Data Roaming and turn it on. On iPhones running iOS 17 and 18, this option is sometimes off by default even after switching countries.

Step 3: airplane mode on/off

Enable airplane mode for 10 seconds, then disable it. The phone searches for a network from scratch. Wait 30 seconds before opening any app.

Step 4: full restart

A full power-off, not just a screen lock. When the phone boots up, it renegotiates the eSIM profile with the Japanese network. It often works when airplane mode doesn’t.

Step 5: check your plan’s expiry date

If you bought the plan more days ago than your plan covers (for example, you bought a 7-day plan 10 days ago), it may have expired before you used it. Check your purchase confirmation email.

Step 6: contact your provider from the airport

Narita (Terminals 1 and 2) and Haneda (International Terminal 3) have free WiFi in the arrivals area. Connect and contact your provider’s support from there.

Checklist — Android (Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi)

Step 1: verify the eSIM is active

Go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager. The eSIM should appear as active. If it’s disabled, enable it from there.

Step 2: select the eSIM as your data line

In the same SIM Manager menu, tap Mobile Data and select the eSIM as the default data line.

Step 3: enable data roaming

Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Data Roaming. Turn it on. On Samsung devices running One UI 6+, this is off by default when the phone detects you’re outside your home country.

Step 4: airplane mode on/off + wait 30 seconds

Same as on iPhone. Give the phone time to register on the network before trying to open apps.

Step 5: full restart

If nothing has worked so far, power off completely and restart. Android phones take slightly longer than iPhones to register new eSIM profiles after a reboot — give it a full minute before checking.

Step 6: clear the settings app cache (Samsung only)

On some Samsung Galaxy devices there’s a known bug where the SIM manager cache blocks registration on foreign networks. Go to Settings → Apps → search "Settings" → Storage → Clear Cache. Restart after.

The problem isn’t your phone — it’s the plan

If you’ve followed every step and still have no data, the issue probably isn’t your configuration: it’s the plan itself. It’s possible that:

  • The plan doesn’t cover Japan (some “Asia” plans specifically exclude Japan)
  • The provider uses a network that isn’t available in your area (Narita is in Chiba prefecture, not Tokyo — coverage in some terminals differs)
  • The plan expired or didn’t activate correctly

In that case you need a new plan. Here are MolaHop’s Japan prices:

How much data do you actually need in Japan

It’s the question most travelers get wrong. In Japan you’ll use your phone more than expected, for three specific reasons:

Google Maps on overdrive. Tokyo’s metro network is huge. Without maps you’re literally lost, and you’ll have them open for hours.

Google Translate camera mode. Point your camera at a Japanese menu and it translates in real time. Extremely useful, but it uses data continuously.

Mobile payments (Suica/IC Card digital). Suica is available as a digital card on iPhone and Android. Loading and using it requires an active connection at certain points.

Realistic estimates by trip type:

  • 7-day trip, normal use (maps + WhatsApp + occasional social media): 3–5 GB
  • 14-day trip, heavy use (remote work + streaming + photos): 15–20 GB
  • 30-day trip or digital nomad: unlimited plan or 50 GB

We’re not neutral here, but the prices are verifiable — and we’re not the cheapest on every plan. On 1 October 2026 Nomad was cheaper than us on 5GB and 10GB (on 10GB by five cents, with a sale price), and SimLocal, Nomad and Airalo were cheaper on 7-day unlimited:

Before your next trip: install the eSIM from home

The most common mistake isn’t a configuration error — it’s timing. Installing the eSIM at the airport after landing, with the phone in airplane mode and immigration queues waiting, is a recipe for something going wrong.

The right way:

  1. Buy the eSIM 24–48 hours before your flight. The profile takes a few minutes to download, and you’ll have time to confirm it’s installed correctly.
  2. Install it at home on stable WiFi. The profile download works better on a solid connection.
  3. Don’t activate it until you land. Most plans start counting from your first connection to a foreign network, not from purchase.
  4. Save the QR code or activation link in your photos. If you lose the confirmation email at the airport, you have it offline.

With MolaHop you receive the activation link directly via WhatsApp and email as soon as your eSIM is ready. No waiting, no hunting through spam folders.

FAQ

Does the eSIM work on the Shinkansen? Yes, as long as you’re on a network with good tunnel coverage. NTT Docomo is the most reliable on the Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo–Osaka). There will be brief dropouts in rural stretches — that’s normal and happens with local SIMs too.

Can I use hotspot with a MolaHop eSIM in Japan? Yes, on compatible devices. Useful if you’re traveling with someone without an eSIM, or if you need to connect a laptop.

Do I need a Japanese number for apps like LINE? No. LINE works fine with your regular number. You just need data.

Does the eSIM work in Okinawa? Yes. Coverage extends across all of Japan including the southern islands.

Can I keep my home SIM active at the same time? Yes. Your dual SIM phone can run your home SIM for calls/SMS and the Japan eSIM for data simultaneously. Just make sure to disable data roaming on your home SIM to avoid any surprise charges.
