You’ve just landed. You turn on your phone. The eSIM you bought has no internet. And now you’re searching airport WiFi for a guide that tells you what to do — while the immigration queue moves forward.
Most “my eSIM isn’t working” guides hand you a list of ten possible causes and leave you to guess which one is yours. This one doesn’t. Here you find your exact symptom and follow only the steps that apply to you, ordered by what genuinely fails most often.
Find the message or situation you see on your screen below and go straight to that section.
- I see “No Service” or “Searching…”
- I have signal but internet won’t load
- My QR code or activation link never arrived
- I get “Activation Error” when scanning the QR
- It was working and suddenly stopped
First: the three most common failures
Most eSIM problems on landing are one of these three things, and all three are fixed in under a minute. Try them before going to your specific symptom:
1. Data roaming is off. By far the number one cause. Your travel eSIM needs roaming enabled to connect to the country’s network — and no, your home carrier won’t charge you, because you’re using the eSIM’s data, not your home line.
2. The eSIM isn’t selected as your data line. Having it installed isn’t enough. It has to be explicitly set as the line that uses data. If you already turned on roaming and still have no internet, it’s almost certainly this: we walk through it in I turned on roaming and still have no internet: the two-line problem.
3. You haven’t waited long enough. After landing, the phone takes one to three minutes to register on the local network. A “No Service” in the first few seconds is normal. Give it time.
If after checking all three you still have no data, find your exact symptom below.
I see “No Service” or “Searching…”
The phone can’t latch onto any network in the country. Follow these steps in order and stop as soon as you have signal:
Step 1 — Enable data roaming.
iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → [your eSIM] → Data Roaming → ON.
Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Data Roaming → ON.
Step 2 — Airplane mode for 15 seconds. Turn it on, wait 15 seconds, turn it off. Forces the phone to search for networks from scratch. Wait 30 seconds before checking.
Step 3 — Full restart. Complete power-off, not a screen lock. On boot, the phone renegotiates the profile with the local network. Give it a full minute before checking.
Step 4 — Manual network selection.
If it still won’t connect, pick the network manually.
iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Network Selection → turn off Automatic and choose a carrier from the list.
Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Network Operators → Search → choose one.
Try the country’s carriers one by one until one connects. Once you have data, switch back to Automatic.
Step 5 — Confirm you’re in your plan’s coverage area. A country eSIM only works in that country. If you bought a Turkey eSIM and you’re still on a layover in Frankfurt, it won’t connect until you land in Turkey. Obvious, but it happens.
If after step 5 you still have “No Service”, the problem may be with the plan rather than the settings. Message us on WhatsApp from the airport WiFi at wa.molahop.com and we’ll look at it with you on the spot.
I have signal but internet won’t load
You see signal bars, but WhatsApp won’t send and Maps won’t load. The network recognises you but data isn’t flowing. Causes in order of likelihood:
1 — Data roaming is still off. Sounds repetitive, but it’s common to have network signal (registration) without data (roaming). Double-check roaming is ON for the specific eSIM line, not your home SIM.
2 — The eSIM isn’t your active data line.
You have signal through your home SIM and data through neither. Go to Mobile Data and confirm the line selected for data is the travel eSIM. If you select it and the connection still drops away, your iPhone may be switching it on its own: see the two-line problem.
3 — You have a VPN or blocker active. A VPN left on can stop data flowing after changing countries. Turn it off while troubleshooting.
4 — The APN.
If you have signal, roaming on, the eSIM as your data line, and still nothing loads — the APN may be wrong. Most eSIMs configure it automatically, so this is rare. If you’ve got this far: go to Settings → Mobile Data → MolaHop line → APN, enter globaldata and leave every other field blank. Save and restart the phone. If it still won’t load, message us on WhatsApp.
My QR code or activation link never arrived
You bought the eSIM but you don’t see the email or the message. With MolaHop the activation link arrives by WhatsApp and email as soon as your eSIM is ready. If you don’t see it:
1 — Check spam and the Promotions tab. The email with the QR lands there more often than it should. Search “MolaHop”.
2 — Check the WhatsApp of the number you bought with. The message goes to the number you entered at purchase. If you mistyped it, that’s the problem.
3 — Confirm the payment went through. If the payment stalled halfway, the eSIM isn’t issued. Check whether you were charged and got the purchase confirmation email.
4 — Message us. If you paid and five minutes later you still have no QR, message us on WhatsApp at wa.molahop.com with your purchase email. We resend the link on the spot — no ticket, no 24-hour wait, a person answers you.
I get “Activation Error” when scanning the QR
The QR won’t install. Almost always one of these:
1 — You already scanned it. An eSIM QR is single-use. If you already installed it (even if you later deleted the profile), that QR is spent. You don’t need to scan it again: the eSIM is already in Settings → Mobile Data, you just need to activate it there.
2 — You don’t have a good connection while installing. Downloading the profile needs stable WiFi or data. If you’re installing on a weak connection, it fails. Connect to good WiFi and retry.
3 — The phone isn’t compatible or is carrier-locked. If your phone is locked to your home carrier, it won’t accept other eSIMs. Check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock: it should say “No SIM restrictions”.
4 — Manual installation instead of QR. If the QR fails but you have the link, you can install manually. Message us on WhatsApp and we’ll walk you through the manual activation details step by step.
Don’t delete the eSIM from your phone thinking it’ll fix things. If the profile is already installed, deleting it can leave you with no eSIM at all: the QR works for one installation only. Leave it where it is. If you need to reinstall it, message us first.
It was working and suddenly stopped
You had data and it cut out. Most likely, in order:
1 — The plan’s data ran out. If you bought 5GB and used it, the eSIM stops giving internet. It’s the most common cause of a mid-trip cutout. Message us on WhatsApp and we’ll help you top up or extend.
2 — The plan expired. Plans have validity in days (7, 15, 30). If your 7-day plan hit day 8, it’s over, even with unused GB left.
3 — You’re in a no-coverage area. If you’ve just headed into the desert, a train tunnel or a mountain area, the cutout is coverage, not the eSIM. Return to a signal area and check.
4 — You changed country. A country eSIM doesn’t work across the border. If you went from Greece to Albania, or Thailand to Cambodia, you need an eSIM for the new country.
The difference with other providers
Many eSIM providers send you to a self-service panel or a support ticket. When you’re at a foreign airport with no data, waiting for a reply feels like an eternity.
With MolaHop there’s no app or panel to fend for yourself in. You message WhatsApp at wa.molahop.com and a person who can see your order resolves it with you on the spot — resend the QR, check the plan status, send you the APN, top up data. It’s the reason a lot of people switch to us after a bad experience with another provider at an airport.
Before your next trip: how to never go through this again
Almost all airport problems are avoided by doing one thing: installing the eSIM at home, calmly, before you fly.
- Buy it 24-48h ahead. Gives the profile time to download and lets you confirm it installed correctly.
- Install on stable WiFi at home. Not at the airport in a rush.
- Don’t activate it until you land. The plan counts from the first connection to a foreign network, not from purchase.
- Save the QR in your photos. If you lose the email at the airport, you have it offline.
- On landing, just two actions: set the eSIM as your data line and turn on roaming. Nothing else.
Activation guides by destination
Every country has its own network quirks. If you’re heading to one of these destinations, its guide has the specific details on carriers, coverage by area and activation:
- Japan eSIM: activation and checklist
- Turkey eSIM: the BTK block and how to avoid it
- Thailand eSIM: complete coverage guide
- Albania eSIM: guide and the Corfu roaming trap
- Morocco eSIM: coverage leg by leg
FAQ
Does enabling data roaming charge me roaming from my home carrier? No. When you use a travel eSIM, data comes from that eSIM, not your home line. Roaming has to be enabled for the eSIM to connect to the local network, but it doesn’t generate charges from your home carrier. That said: turn off roaming on your home SIM so that one doesn’t connect.
Can I have my home SIM and the eSIM at the same time? Yes. Home SIM for calls and SMS, eSIM for data. Just make sure data is assigned to the eSIM and roaming on the home SIM is off.
Should I delete the eSIM if it’s not working? No. Deleting it almost never fixes anything and you can lose it: the QR won’t work for a second installation. Follow your symptom’s steps. If you need to reinstall it, message us first.
How long does it take to activate on landing? Between one and three minutes after leaving airplane mode. If there’s nothing after five minutes, go to the “No Service” steps.
Does GPS work even if the eSIM has no data? Yes, GPS is independent. With offline maps downloaded you can navigate even while sorting out the data issue.
